Women’s College World Series, ISSA World Championships nominated for SportsTravel awards
8/20/2009

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The 2009 NCAA Women's College World Series, hosted at the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Okla., has been nominated by the readers of SportsTravel magazine for the “Collegiate Sporting Events — Best Sports Event Series or Circuit” and the “Sports Event of the Year” 2009 SportsTravel Awards.

The public can vote for the 2009 NCAA Women’s College World Series through September 14 at www.SportsTravelMagazine.com. Official ballots are also available in the August and September issues of SportsTravel magazine.

The 2008 International Senior Softball Association (ISSA) World Championships is also nominated in the single event category.

The University of Washington, led by the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie (Langley, British Columbia), won the event, held May 28-June 2, by overtaking the University of Florida. Among the event highs were an attendance of 8,475 fans for the Saturday evening session, breaking the previous single-season mark of 8,323 set Friday.

"Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of Oklahoma City should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their city is being recognized for its excellence," said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine.

Criteria for nomination and voting include superior organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for the competitors and/or spectators at the event, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS 2009 Conference & Expo, October 13-17, 2009, in New Orleans.

"SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they really know what it takes to execute a high-quality athletic event," said Schneider. "The SportsTravel Awards program is an opportunity for them to honor their peers and the cities that host sporting events for a job well done."

The ballot includes nominees in amateur, collegiate and professional categories. Awards in those three categories will be given for best single-sport event, best multi-sport or multi-discipline event, and best sports event series or circuit. Voters will also pick best new sports event and an overall Sports Event of the Year from among the nominated events.

Other events up for honors include the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where the United States took home the silver medal in the women’s softball competition.
