Stoney Burke named ASA Houston Commissioner
10/7/2009

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, named Stoney Burke the ASA Houston Commissioner, effective Oct. 1. Burke, a former men’s fast pitch and slow pitch player, has served the Houston ASA since 1991 as the Junior Olympic Commissioner.

“I have been involved with the ASA for 49 years and this is something I have been working toward for a good amount of time,” Burke said. “I played 23 years of men’s open major fast pitch then retired from softball for about a year until my daughter (a fast pitch player who went on to play in college) drug me back into it. I’ve been with the ASA ever since, recently as the Houston JO Commissioner. As the Houston Commissioner, I will continue to serve the organization at a local level and become more involved nationally.”

With Burke as the JO Commissioner, the Houston area youth program has experienced substantial growth, more than doubling the number of youth teams to over 1,300, and adding an additional 10 leagues.

“Stoney Burke has a proven track record in the ASA as the Junior Olympic Commissioner of Houston ASA, we believe that he can take the successes of the JO program and use them to continue the growth of the Houston ASA softball program,” ASA Director of Membership Services Craig Cress said. “We look forward to working with and supporting Stoney as he progresses in this very important role for ASA, the Houston ASA Commissioner’s position.”

A 1970 graduate of Texas A&M University, Burke became a leader within ASA in 1987 when he began serving as the president of the girls softball league North West Sport Association. Burke also served as the president of the Coastal Girls Softball Association from 1989-1991. He is the founder of the Greater Houston Girls Softball Association, currently the governing body of the girls youth softball leagues for Houston.
