New commissioners named
10/28/2009

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- In October, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), the National Governing Body of softball in the United States, named new commissioners for the Florida, Houston, Massachusetts and Philadelphia associations.

Florida ASA

Carlton Benton of Lakeland, Fla., was announced as the Florida ASA commissioner on Oct. 22. Benton had been serving as commissioner of the West Central Florida ASA since 1999 before stepping into the role of the Florida ASA commissioner.

“Carlton has been a real innovator as the commissioner of the West Central Florida ASA, especially with the creation of two highly successful programs — the Field of Dreams Tournament Series for adult slow pitch and the Future Stars League for youth,” ASA Executive Director Ron Radigonda said. “We are confident that he will bring the same creativity and enthusiasm to his new role as Florida ASA commissioner. We are excited to see how the association thrives under his leadership.”

Houston ASA

Stoney Burke of Houston began his term as the commissioner of the Houston ASA on Oct. 1. He was previously the commissioner of Houston ASA's Junior Olympic program, a position he assumed in 1991.

“Stoney Burke has a proven track record in the ASA as the Junior Olympic Commissioner of Houston ASA, we believe that he can take the successes of the JO program and use them to continue the growth of the Houston ASA softball program,” ASA Director of Membership Services Craig Cress said. “We look forward to working with and supporting Stoney as he progresses in this very important role for ASA, the Houston ASA Commissioner’s position.”

Massachusetts ASA

Joseph Alfonse of Lexington, Mass., has been named the Massachusetts ASA commissioner. He began his duties earlier this month after serving as Boston ASA commissioner since 2008.

“The ASA National Office looks forward to assisting Joe Alfonse in working through the transition phase of merging the Massachusetts and Boston ASA associations,” Cress said. “Joe brings enthusiasm and a high level of energy to this important task as ASA continues on its mission of delivering quality softball programs to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

Philadelphia ASA

James “Duck” McDonald has been named the Philadelphia ASA commissioner on Oct. 28. McDonald has helped oversee the association since June 2009 when longtime commissioner Walt Lucas passed away.

“Walt Lucas was one of a kind and will be missed by all, but we are very comfortable with the selection of James ‘Duck’ McDonald as the Philadelphia ASA commissioner,” Cress said. “Duck has been heavily involved with the running of Philadelphia ASA for several years and we are sure that he will continue to work with all involved in making Philadelphia ASA a viable and strong ASA Association.”
